Bathrooms are the hardest room in the house for any paint. An anti mould paint for bathroom walls and ceilings has to survive a daily cycle no other room throws at it: steam, condensation, temperature swings and hours of trapped humidity. Why do bathroom walls go mouldy so fast?

Run a shower for ten minutes and you push the room's humidity close to 100%. All that vapour condenses on the coldest surfaces — the ceiling, the wall behind the toilet, the window reveal, the corners where insulation is thinnest. Do that twice a day, every day, and those surfaces spend most of their life damp.

Black spot mould (Aspergillus niger) needs humidity above roughly 75% to grow. In a typical UK bathroom it gets that daily, which is why mould reappears within weeks of being scrubbed off ordinary paint. The wall was never the problem — the paint surface was simply somewhere mould could live.

What makes a paint genuinely mould resistant?

Plenty of tins say "bathroom paint" and mean nothing more than a wipeable finish. Genuine mould resistant bathroom paint has an active fungicide blended through the emulsion itself, so the dried film stops spores germinating on contact. That's the difference between a paint that tolerates a bathroom and one that defends it.

Legacy is a solvent-free acrylic emulsion with in-film fungicidal protection, batch-tested before it leaves our factory. How to prep a bathroom before painting

1. Kill and remove existing mould. Never paint over live growth — the spores stay active under the film. Our black mould removal guide covers the full method.
2. Wash off soap residue and surface grime, then rinse. Paint won't grip a greasy surface.
3. Let everything dry completely. Don't shower for a few hours before painting; a damp wall undermines adhesion.
4. Apply two coats, allowing the first to dry fully. Two coats build the continuous protected film that does the work. Start with the ceiling — it's where condensation hits first (see our ceiling guide).

Will it stop mould forever?

Honest answer: the paint keeps the surface hostile to mould for as long as the film lasts — years in normal use. But if your extractor fan is broken and the window never opens, you're still filling the room with moisture every day, and that moisture will find somewhere to sit. The paint protects your walls and ceiling; a working fan protects everything else, including grout and sealant, which no paint covers. Do both and the bathroom stays genuinely clean.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it in a shower cubicle or wet room?
Yes on walls and ceilings around the wet area. It's not for surfaces under constant direct water flow like inside a shower tray — those need tiling or wet-wall panels.

Do I need a special primer?
On sound, clean, previously painted surfaces, no. On bare fresh plaster, use a mist coat first as you would with any emulsion.

How much do I need for an average bathroom?
A 2.5L tin comfortably covers a typical UK bathroom's walls and ceiling with two coats. For larger rooms or two bathrooms, the 5L at £49.99 is the better value.

Matt finish in a bathroom — really?
