Does Anti Mould Paint Actually Work?

Short answer: yes — anti mould paint works, but only for the right kind of mould problem. If your mould comes from condensation and humidity, a fungicidal paint will keep the surface clear for years. If it comes from a leak or rising damp, no paint on earth will fix it. How is anti mould paint different from ordinary paint?

Ordinary emulsion is basically food for mould. The dried paint film holds onto surface moisture, and household dust settles on it — that's everything a spore needs to germinate. Wipe mould off a standard painted wall and it's usually back within weeks, because you've removed the visible growth but not the conditions.

An anti mould paint like Legacy is a solvent-free acrylic emulsion with an active fungicide blended through it during manufacture. When a spore lands on the cured film, the biocide stops it germinating. The growth cycle never starts, so the black spots never appear. It's not a coating that hides mould — it's a coating mould can't live on.

Every batch we make is tested before it leaves our East Kilbride factory, because the fungicide loading is the whole point of the product. Get that wrong and you've just made expensive white emulsion.

What kind of mould will it stop?

The black spot mould you see in UK bathrooms and bedrooms is usually Aspergillus niger. It thrives wherever humidity regularly sits above about 75% — bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, cold external corners of bedrooms, and behind wardrobes where air can't circulate. That's condensation mould, and it's exactly what a fungicidal paint is designed for.

• Works on: condensation mould on walls and ceilings, recurring black spots in bathrooms and kitchens, mildew behind furniture, damp-prone basements and cellars.
• Won't fix: penetrating damp from a leaking roof or gutter, rising damp from a failed damp-proof course, or plumbing leaks inside the wall. Paint over those and the moisture pushes through — the wall stays wet and eventually the finish fails.

How long does it keep working?

The fungicide is locked into the paint film itself, so protection lasts as long as the film does — years, in normal use. It isn't something that washes out the first time you wipe the wall down; Legacy cleans with warm water without losing its protection. What shortens any anti mould paint's life is abrading the film away or painting over it with a standard emulsion (which puts a mould-friendly surface back on top — more on that in our guide to painting over anti mould paint).

Does it fix the cause of the mould?

No, and any manufacturer who claims otherwise is at it. The paint protects the surface; it doesn't dry your air. If a room produces a lot of moisture and has poor airflow, you'll still get condensation on windows and cold surfaces. The paint means that moisture no longer turns into black mould on your walls — but pairing it with better ventilation (extractor fans, trickle vents, opening windows after showers) gives the best long-term result. Frequently asked questions

Is anti mould paint just paint with a mould claim on the tin?
No. It contains an in-film fungicide added at manufacture. The finish looks like a normal matt emulsion, but the film chemistry is different.

Is it safe to use in bedrooms and around children?
Legacy is solvent-free and low-VOC, applied like any emulsion with brush or roller. Ventilate while painting and let it dry fully, as with any paint.

How many coats do I need?
Two. The second coat builds a continuous protected film — one coat leaves thin spots where growth can find a foothold.

Will it work on a previously mouldy wall?
Yes, provided the existing mould is killed and cleaned off first and the surface is dry before you paint.
