How to Apply Gravel Glue — The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Applied correctly, Pro-Hold™ gravel glue produces a durable bonded surface that holds loose gravel, pea shingle, pebbles, decorative stone, and bark mulch in place for up to 3 years. Applied incorrectly — wrong depth, wrong weather, wrong surface prep — it fails. This guide covers every step in the correct sequence so you get the result you are expecting.

Before You Begin — The Non-Negotiables

Four conditions must be in place before you open a bottle. None of them can be worked around:

  • Gravel depth must not exceed 75mm (3 inches). This is the most common cause of failure. Loose gravel deeper than 75mm cannot be stabilised by any binder product. Reduce and compact depth first.
  • Temperature must be above 10°C. Below 10°C, curing slows severely. The bond will be weak or fail to set.
  • Surface must be dry. Moisture in the aggregate or on the surface prevents adhesion.
  • Dry weather must be forecast for at least 72 hours after application. Rain during curing will dilute the binder and significantly weaken the bond.
⚠ Not suitable for vehicle driveways or any surface with vehicle loads. Pro-Hold™ is a domestic pedestrian-grade surface binder. Vehicle weight exceeds the bond strength regardless of quantity applied. Check the full suitability guide →

What You Will Need

Item Notes
Pro-Hold™ Gravel Glue Correct quantity for your area — 1 × 5L covers approx. 8m² using the 2-coat method
Clean watering can For even distribution over the surface
Stiff rake For levelling and spreading material evenly before application
Hand tamper or plate compactor Essential for compacting the sub-base and for re-tamping after each coat while still wet
Stiff brush For working the second coat into any low spots or pooled areas
Tape measure To confirm area dimensions for coverage calculation

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 01
Prepare and compact the base until completely firm

Clear all weeds, debris, and loose soil from the area. If laying new gravel, lay a weed-suppressing membrane beneath the aggregate before spreading. Spread and level your gravel or aggregate to an even depth — maximum 75mm. Use a vibrating plate compactor or a hand tamper and compact the aggregate firmly until the surface is solid underfoot. This is the most critical factor in long-term performance. A soft or poorly compacted base will always break the bond regardless of product quality or quantity.

Step 02
Apply the first coat evenly using a clean watering can

Pour Pro-Hold™ directly from the watering can in slow, even passes across the surface. Work systematically in one direction — do not rush or allow large puddles to form. For a 5L bottle covering 8m², aim for consistent coverage with no dry patches. Immediately after applying each section, re-tamp the wet surface with your tamper. This forces the binder down into the contact points between stones and is the step most people skip. Re-tamping while wet makes the biggest single difference to bond strength.

Step 03
Allow 24 hours before applying the second coat

Allow the first coat to dry for a minimum of 24 hours. Do not walk on the surface during this time. The surface will appear damp or slightly darker while drying — this is normal. Do not apply the second coat until the first coat is fully dry to the touch. Rushing the second coat before the first has fully dried will produce a weaker bond.

Step 04
Apply the second coat and work into low spots

Apply the second coat in the same methodical pattern as the first. Use a stiff brush to work the binder into any low spots or areas where the first coat may have pooled unevenly. Re-tamp again while still wet. Two full coats are always required for the rated 3-year performance — a single coat will not provide the same durability.

Step 05
Protect during cure — no foot traffic for 72 hours

After the second coat, keep the surface completely free of foot traffic and protected from rain for the full 72-hour cure window. Once cured, walk the treated area firmly to confirm the bond before normal use. If any patches feel loose or unset, clean the area and apply a single top-up coat. The surface is completely safe for children and pets once fully cured at 72 hours.

Application Methods Compared

Method Best for Coverage Key notes
2-Coat Surface (recommended) Existing installed gravel or aggregate ~8m² per 5L Apply to settled, compacted surface. Re-tamp after each coat while wet.
Mix-In New gravel being laid fresh ~6 × 25kg bags per 5L Mix binder through dry aggregate before compacting. Better penetration on new installations.

Application Rules — The Non-Negotiable Numbers

Rule Requirement Why
Minimum temperature Above 10°C Below 10°C curing is severely slowed and the bond will be weak
Weather at application Dry only — no rain Rain dilutes the binder and prevents bonding
Weather after application 72-hour dry window required Rain before cure will weaken or destroy the bond
Gravel depth Maximum 75mm Deeper gravel moves under load regardless of any product
Stone size — optimal 4–10mm More contact points between stones = stronger bond
Stone size — maximum Up to 20mm Larger stones bond with fewer contact points
Time between coats 24 hours minimum First coat must be fully dry before recoating
Full cure time 72 hours No foot traffic until 72 hours after the final coat
Application to wet surface Never Moisture prevents adhesion at point of application

Common Causes of Failure

The vast majority of cases where gravel glue fails to hold trace back to one of these preparation or application errors — not to product quality:

  • Gravel depth over 75mm. The most common cause. Reduce to 75mm and compact before applying any product.
  • Applying to a wet or damp surface. The aggregate and the ground beneath must be completely dry.
  • Skipping the re-tamp after applying each coat. Tamping while wet forces binder into stone contact points and dramatically increases bond strength.
  • Applying only one coat. Two full coats are required. One coat will not provide the rated durability.
  • Applying below 10°C. Cold temperatures prevent full curing regardless of wait time.
  • Rain during the 72-hour cure window. Always check the local forecast before starting.
  • Soft or uncompacted sub-base. A moving base always breaks the bond. Compact until completely solid.
  • Using on a vehicle driveway. Vehicle loads exceed the bond strength of any domestic gravel binder.
  • Under-applying product. Thin coverage produces weak bonding. Measure your area and order enough for the full project.
Tip: Order enough product for the full project in one delivery. Patchy application from running short mid-project produces inconsistent results. Use the coverage calculator on the product page to confirm how many bottles you need before ordering.

After Application — Maintenance and Top-Up

Once fully cured, a Pro-Hold™ treated surface requires minimal maintenance:

  • Sweep and lightly hose as needed to remove dirt and debris.
  • Avoid sustained high-pressure washing directly on the bonded surface.
  • If areas loosen from heavy wear over time, clean the affected area and apply a single top-up coat.
  • Under normal domestic pedestrian traffic with a correctly compacted base, expect up to 3 years of bonding performance.
