Section 2 — Definition

What Is Tomato Feed?

Tomato feed is a high-potassium liquid plant food formulated specifically for fruiting plants. Where general-purpose fertilisers focus on nitrogen for leaf growth, tomato feed delivers a higher ratio of potassium (potash) — the nutrient that drives flower set, fruit development, fruit size, ripening, and natural sugar content.

Tom-Sol Tomato Feed has an NPK ratio of 4-3-8, meaning every dose delivers balanced nitrogen and phosphorus alongside double-strength potassium — exactly what tomato, pepper, chilli, and aubergine plants need from flowering through to harvest.

Section 3 — Key Benefits

Why Choose Tom-Sol Tomato Feed

Tom-Sol is formulated to outperform standard tomato feeds on the metrics that matter for a successful harvest — fruit size, flavour, disease resistance, and value per bottle.

High-Potash for Bigger, Sweeter Fruit

The 4-3-8 NPK ratio delivers double-strength potassium — driving flower set, fruit swell, even ripening, and natural sugar development for noticeably better flavour.

Micronutrient Shield vs Blossom End Rot

Chelated calcium and magnesium remain fully soluble and available at the roots — preventing the classic calcium-lockout failures that cause blossom end rot in container-grown tomatoes.

Enriched with Natural Seaweed Extracts

Natural seaweed extracts stimulate beneficial soil microbes and build plant resilience against pests, heat stress, and short dry spells — giving plants the energy reserve to keep fruiting through tougher conditions.

Concentrated — 1L Makes 250L

Mix 15ml into 4.5L of water. A single 1-litre bottle produces up to 250 litres of ready-to-use feed — and a 5-litre bottle makes up to 1,250 litres. Exceptional value per dose.

Eco-Friendly & Safe

100% biodegradable, vegan-friendly, and safe for bees, earthworms, pets, and children once diluted and applied as directed. Manufactured to UK environmental standards.

Versatile — Beyond Tomatoes

Works equally well on peppers, chillies, aubergines (same nightshade family), plus high-potash-loving flowering plants including roses and hydrangeas. One bottle, many uses.

Section 5 — How to Use

How to Use — Dosage & Timing

Tom-Sol is a concentrate — always dilute before use. Shake the bottle well, then mix at the recommended rate and water plants at the base around the root zone, avoiding wetting the foliage where possible.

Section 6 — Beyond Tomatoes

What Else Can I Use Tomato Feed On?

Despite the name, "tomato feed" is really shorthand for high-potash plant food — and any plant that flowers and fruits benefits from extra potassium. Tom-Sol works equally well on the plants below.

Peppers

Same nightshade family as tomatoes — identical feeding needs. Boosts fruit set, ripening, and capsaicin development.

Read the guide →

Chillies

High-potash feed intensifies heat and ripening colour. Apply weekly from second truss set through harvest.

Read the guide →

Aubergines

Nightshade-family fruiting plant. Identical dilution and frequency to tomatoes — supports the heavy fruit set aubergines produce.

Read the guide →

Roses

Potassium drives flowering and disease resistance. Apply fortnightly from May–September for stronger, longer-lasting blooms.

Read the guide →

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas reward high potash with bigger flower heads. Particularly helpful for repeat-flowering varieties.

Other Fruiting Plants

Cucumbers, courgettes, melons, and squashes all benefit from the high-potash boost once they begin flowering.

Where Tom-Sol is not the right choice: avoid using it on leafy crops like lettuce, spinach, and herbs where nitrogen-led growth is preferred over fruit and flower production. For those, choose a balanced general feed instead.

Section 7 — How It Compares

How Tom-Sol Compares to Standard Tomato Feeds

Most supermarket tomato feeds deliver a basic NPK ratio and little else. Tom-Sol is engineered with the secondary nutrients that determine whether a tomato season ends well or in disappointment.

★★★★★

Best tomato crop in years

"Switched from Tomorite to Tom-Sol this season after reading the NPK breakdown. The fruit set is noticeably heavier on my Sungold and Gardener's Delight — and I haven't seen a single case of blossom end rot. The 1L bottle lasted me the whole greenhouse season."

— J. Robertson, Glasgow · Greenhouse
★★★★★

Works on peppers too

"Bought it for the tomatoes, ended up using it on my chillies and peppers as well. Capsaicin levels in the Carolina Reapers were the best they've ever been. The concentrate makes incredible value — 5 litres has lasted me two full seasons on the allotment."

— D. Patel, Birmingham · Allotment
★★★★★

Roses bloomed all summer

"Tried it on my David Austin roses on the advice of the article on the website. Fortnightly feeding from May through September gave me the strongest, longest-lasting bloom display I've ever had. Will be ordering the 5L for next year."

— M. Edwards, Surrey · Cottage Garden
Section 9 — FAQ

Tomato Feed FAQs

Direct answers to the most common questions about Tom-Sol and tomato feed in general. For deeper guidance, see the Useful Info guides.

Tomato feed is best suited to fruiting plants and flowering plants that benefit from high potassium. It works well on tomatoes, peppers, chillies, aubergines, roses, hydrangeas, and other plants that produce flowers and fruit. Avoid using it on leafy crops like lettuce, spinach, and herbs, where nitrogen-led growth is preferred over fruit and flower production.
Yes. Tom-Sol Tomato Feed has an NPK ratio of 4-3-8, meaning potassium (K) is the dominant nutrient at 8 parts compared to 4 parts nitrogen and 3 parts phosphorus. Potash drives flowering, fruit set, fruit size, sugar content, and disease resistance — which is why high-potash feeds are specifically recommended for tomatoes and other fruiting crops.
Sealed Tom-Sol bottles store well for 2 years from the date of manufacture if kept in a cool, dark place. Once opened, use within 12 months for best results. Mixed diluted feed should be used the same day — once water is added, the solution is best applied immediately and not stored for later use.
Mix 15ml (about one capful) of Tom-Sol into 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of water. Apply roughly 0.5 to 1 litre of the diluted solution per established plant per feed, depending on plant size and pot/container volume. A 10-litre grow bag with two tomato plants typically needs around 2 litres of diluted feed per watering.
Begin feeding once the second flower truss has set fruit — typically late spring to early summer in the UK. Feeding too early during vegetative growth wastes potassium that the plant cannot yet use, and excess nitrogen during fruiting drives leaf growth at the expense of fruit. Feeding after the second truss directly supports fruit set and ripening.
Yes. Roses respond very well to high-potash feed because potassium promotes strong flowering and disease resistance. Apply Tom-Sol at the same 15ml per 4.5L dilution every 2 weeks during the flowering season from May through September. See our "Which plants can you feed with tomato feed?" guide for full plant-by-plant guidance.
Tom-Sol is a fortified organic-based liquid concentrate. It combines naturally derived nutrients with bio-ready calcium and magnesium and natural seaweed extracts. It is biodegradable, vegan-friendly, and safe for bees, earthworms, pets and children when applied at the recommended dilution. Note that "fortified organic" means the base is organic with added micronutrients — it is not Soil Association certified organic.
Tomato feeds are typically slightly acidic in concentrate form, with a pH in the 5.5 to 6.5 range, which matches the slightly acidic conditions tomato plants prefer. Tom-Sol is formulated within this range. Once diluted into normal tap water, the resulting feed is close to pH-neutral and safe for general garden use without affecting soil pH significantly.

Why Tom-Sol is the Go-To Choice for Tomato Growers

While standard tomato feeds offer basic nutrition, they often lack the secondary minerals required to sustain "hungry" nightshade plants over a long season, leading to split fruit, yellow leaves, or bland yields.

The Tom-Sol Advantage: We don't just feed the plant; we optimize its metabolism. Tom-Sol utilizes a proprietary Chelated Micro-Nutrient Shield. This keeps vital calcium and magnesium fully soluble and immediately accessible to the roots, preventing lockouts and drastically reducing the risk of blossom end rot.

Furthermore, our formula includes natural seaweed extracts that stimulate soil microbes, building plant resilience against common pests, heat stress, and sudden dry spells. With Tom-Sol, you aren't just growing tomatoes - you're growing prize-winning, sweet, firm, and heavy yields every single time.
